The Lemieux Dome project consists of four adjacent properties: Vital (16 continuous mining titles), Gasse (two claim blocks for a total of 24 claims), the Appalaches option (Mont-de-l'Aigle; 172 claims), and Cascapedia (132 designated cells). These claims cover a surface area of 14,957 hectares (approximately 150 km2) in the Lemieux Township on NTS map sheet 22B16, just south of Parc National de la Gaspésie and about equal distances from Ste-Anne-des-Monts, Murdochville and New Richmond.
Geology and mineralization
The Lemieux dome is an anticlinal subcircular geologic structure almost 10 km across. It affects the Siluro-Devonian metasedimentary rocks on the north flank of the Connecticut Valley-Gaspé synclinorium. The core of the Lemieux dome is occupied by the St-Léon (SDsl) and Forillon (Dfr) sedimentary formations, whereas the Shiphead (Dsh) and Indian Cove (Dic) sedimentary formations, as well as the Yorl Lake (Dyl) and York River (Dyr) volcanic and sedimentary formations, are found along the periphery. Basalts of the York River Formation are particularly abundant to the south and east of the dome where they represent the predominant lithologies. All formations are cut by numerous felsic intrusions, from monzonites to dacites, which occur as dykes and sills.
At present, the most attractive feature of the area is the impressive number of mineralized veins and breccias. In the 1940s and 1950s, these mineralized veins and breccias were explored by trenching and drilling that intercepted structures measuring 1 to 10 m thick and more than several hundred metres long. The grades for the veins and breccias were highly variable, some ranging from 5-10 % Zn and 3-5 % Pb.
Several mineral deposit types have been proposed for the property, the most important (and most probable) of these being deposits related to intrusive stocks. Such deposits include copper porphyries, copper skarns, and massive sulphide replacements in marble and limestone. The central and southern parts of the Lemieux dome have seen little exploration and have only been drilled by a few short holes.
Threegold Resources is currently conducting diamond drilling on its Lemieux Dome project. Fieldwork was successfully launched in the summer of 2006 with stripping and sampling of exposed outcrops.
The 2007 year began with a compilation of pre-existing geological data and by the reprocessing of geophysical data from various former surveys. Results of the summer rock sampling program helped guide the drilling that is currently underway.
